Treatment of Kawasaki disease
Kawasaki disease is treated in hospital. The treatment works best when it is started as soon as possible (within 10 days of the first symptoms beginning). This reduces the risk of heart-related complications.
Treatment includes:
- Gammaglobulin (purified antibodies obtained from human blood). This is given intravenously into a vein.
- Aspirin, which reduces inflammation in the coronary arteries. (This is one of the few times aspirin is given to children.)
