Recovery of Kidney transplant

A kidney transplant is a major operation, but the recipient should be out of bed in the first couple of days, and usually home by day 10. The first three months require clinic visits several times a week, and often readmission to hospital for investigations or to treat complications.

By three months, most recipients are getting back to work and able to lead fairly normal lives. However, regular blood tests are needed for life to check that the kidney is working well and that the anti-rejection therapy is not affecting the blood cells and immune system too much.

If someone has donated a kidney, they are usually out of hospital in a week, and most of the way back to full activities in six weeks, though it is often best to plan for three months off work.
