Treatment of Legionnaire's disease
Treatment normally includes antibiotics given by mouth (as tablets) or intravenously (directly into a vein) in hospital.
Many antibiotics are very effective against Legionella bacteria. It is usually treated with an antibiotic called erythromycin or a similar antibiotic.
Rifampicin may be added in severe cases. Oxygen may be given if you have breathing difficulties. Intensive care with ventilation may be necessary if the pneumonia is severe.
No treatment is needed for Pontiac fever other than paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce the fever and muscle aches.
