Diagnosis of Leukoplakia

Diagnosis of leukoplakia is based on appearance of a white patch, which develops slowly over a period of weeks or months. Eventually it may have a rough texture and may be sensitive to touch, heat or spicy foods.

A small sample of the area may be taken for examination (biopsy) to confirm diagnosis and that there are no changes indicating mouth cancer. If the leukoplakia is persistent this biopsy may need to be repeated at intervals.
