Causes of Lichen planus
The cause of lichen planus is unknown.
In some rare cases, lichen planus is a reaction to a particular medicine (such as beta-blockers, anti-inflammatory medicine or gold injections for arthritis) or contact with chemicals used in colour photographic developing. Some patients, who only have lichen planus in the mouth, may be allergic to mercury tooth fillings.
Lichen planus is not infectious or hereditary and it cannot be passed on.
