Treatment of Lupus
There is at present no cure for SLE. Treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms and slowing the development of the condition. Individuals can have years in remission but flare-ups do occur.
The treatment will depend on the organs involved. Options include:
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) - such as ibuprofen and aspirin for joint or muscle pain. There is a risk of side effects from these medicines, such as stomach or gut problems.
Corticosteroids (steroids) - may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and suppress activity of the immune system. The most commonly prescribed drug of this type is Prednisolone. A large dose is often required at first, to bring symptoms under control, and the dose may then be reduced gradually.
Immunosuppressant drugs - may be prescribed if you have severe SLE, to suppress the activity of the immune system. However they will reduce the body's resistance to infection, and regular blood and urine tests will be required, to check for side effects. Commonly prescribed immunosuppressants include cyclophosphamide and azathioprine.
Sometimes steroids and immunosuppressants are both prescribed. They may work more effectively when taken together, and research has suggested that fewer side effects may be experienced.
Anti-malarial drugs - such as Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) are often prescribed for skin rashes, tiredness, and muscle and joint pain. Many people with SLE take these drugs long-term.
Other treatments:
- Physiotherapy may be suggested for joint problems.
- If the skin is affected, total avoidance of the sun or the regular application of sunscreens may help prevent rashes.
- Moderate exercise, a balanced diet, no smoking and reduction of stress should all help to reduce the severity of symptoms.
