Causes of Macular degeneration
Macular degeneration results in a partial breakdown of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The RPE is the insulating layer between the retina and the choroid (the layer of blood vessels behind the retina). Fluid leakage occurs, and new blood vessels growing from the choroid destroy the retinal nerve tissue and replace it with scar tissue and the light-sensitive cells in the macular are damaged. The cause is unknown.
