Causes of Marfan syndrome
Marfan syndrome is caused by a defective gene in one of the 46 chromosomes carrying DNA. This gene controls the production of fibrillin, a substance essential to the creation of connective tissue in the body.
75% of cases are inherited, with the remaining 25% occurring as a spontaneous genetic mutation (with neither parent affected).
