Treatment of Marfan syndrome

Treatment is tailored to the patient depending on the severity of symptoms:

  • Regular heart examinations (echocardiograms) are recommended to determine the extent of the damage.  In some cases, medication (usually beta-blockers) is given to lower blood pressure and decrease the strength of the heartbeat, to slow the enlargement of the heart.
  • Eye (ophthalmic) examinations  are also recommended to monitor the function of the eyes.  Glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed.
  • Careful medical and surgical management by a medical team familiar with the related effects of Marfan syndrome can make a great difference to the outlook for people with the disorder.
  • Physiotherapy, and sometimes surgery, can prove useful where Marfan syndrome affects the skeleton.
  • Lifestyle changes, such as good diet, overall fitness and/or a reduction in strenuous exercise for those with heart problems, are advised.
