Treatment of Miscarriage

It is important to know that there is no treatment which can stop an early miscarriage which is already happening. Once the miscarriage is inevitable, however, there may be choices about managing it.

Unless a women has miscarried completely, she may be offered a minor operation (a D&C, dilatation and curettage) under general anaesthesia. She is usually able to go home within a few hours. She may be asked if she would prefer to wait for the pregnancy to happen, or end, spontaneously. Some hospitals may offer medical management with treatment which hastens the process.
