Causes of Molluscum contagiosum

The condition is caused by a virus which is easily transmitted by direct skin contact.  It is more common in children, particularly those with skin conditions such as eczema, probably because they tend to scratch the skin and pass on the infection.  The spots appear on the trunk and upper arms and legs of children.

Adults usually contract molluscum contagiosum through sexual contact, and the spots appear on the lower abdomen, genitals and thighs.
