Multiple myeloma

Multiple myeloma mainly affects people over the age of 50, and affects about one person in 30,000.

It is a cancer of the cells that produce antibodies called plasma cells. It forms in more than one part of the active bone marrow of various bones. It is also called a plasma cell myeloma.

Antibodies are soluble proteins and these abnormal cells produce large quantities of an abnormal protein called Bence Jones protein. This can damage the kidneys.
