Symptoms of Multiple myeloma

The multiple bone marrow tumours lead to destruction of bone. There is bone pain and fractures for no apparent reason (spontaneous fractures), abnormal levels of calcium and protein in the blood, and anaemia. The reduction in production of normal antibodies results in increased risk of infection. Kidney failure can result from the excess calcium and protein. The protein can block up the tubules of the kidneys.

The anaemia causes pallor, weakness, breathlessness on effort and fatigue. The high calcium levels cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, dehydration, drowsiness, confusion and coma.
