Diagnosis of Muscular dystrophy

The condition is supected when symptoms appear. Once muscle weakness is apparent diagnosis consists of:

  • blood tests to identify the abnormal gene and any muscle damage,
  • examination of a sample of muscle tissue (muscle biopsy),
  • measurement of muscle enzymes,
  • ultrasound and electrocardiogram to test for abnormal heart activity, and
  • electromyogram (EMG) to test for electrical activity in the muscles.
