Symptoms of Narcolepsy
The most common symptoms you will experience are excessive sleepiness and daytime sleep attacks.
Cataplexy (sudden loss of muscular control) triggered by an emotion e.g. anger or excitement is also a common symptom. The onset of this symptom may be delayed, sometimes by a couple of years.
Other common symptoms include: -
- Sleep paralysis (inability to move for a minute or two at the beginning or end of sleep)
- Hallucinations (dramatic, dream-like experiences) immediately before falling asleep
- Disturbed night- time sleep, with frequent waking periods, marked by a fast heart rate, agitation and a craving for sweet things.
- There may also be abnormal behaviours e.g. sleep walking
- Short periods of trance-like behaviour in which routine activities are continued automatically
Sleepiness may also lead to blurring of vision, double vision and problems with memory and concentration.
