Causes of Neuralgia

Neuralgia is a result of an abnormality of the nerve so that a sensory stimulus is set up within it. This may be caused by:

  • Injury to the nerve
  • Some unknown nerve abnormality
  • Infection, especially by viruses, or other agency causing nerve inflammation (neuritis)

Neuralgia can occur from necessary cutting of nerves in the course of amputation. In this case the pain will seem to come from the limb or other part that has been removed.
