Policy guidelines of Operations
The NHS is committed to reducing waiting times for people in the UK who are waiting for elective surgery (planned operations) and to patient choice.
Diagnosis and treatment centres (DTCs) will play an important part in reducing waiting times for people who need minor operations. They have been designed to provide high quality treatment, mainly for day surgery or short-term hospital stays. This avoids the delays experienced by some patients when emergency operations take priority. DTCs are also able to diagnose and carry out diagnostic tests such as endoscopies and ultrasound scans.
