Symptoms of Osteomyelitis
Osteomyelitis usually starts suddenly. Symptoms include the following:
- fever,
- severe pain around the bone that is affected,
- swelling and redness at the joints next to the bone. The joints may also feel very tender,
- nausea,
- fatigue, and
- a general feeling of being unwell.
If osteomyelitis affects the spine there may be severe back pain, as well as abdominal pain, sciatica (pain down the leg, which is caused by irritation of the main nerve into the leg, the sciatic nerve) ,and weakness.
If you develop osteomyelitis after breaking a bone you may be able to see pus coming from the skin wound over the break.
