Complications of Otitis media

Some mucus might stay in the ear for a week or so, causing dulled hearing. Persistent hearing loss is usually referred to a specialist.

If the mucus doesn’t clear properly it may cause glue ear, a long-lasting build up of sticky fluid in the ear.

Very rare complications of ear infections include:

  • local bone inflammation (mastoiditis);
  • swelling of a part of the brain called the meninges (meningitis); and
  • temporary numbing of the face.
