Causes of Pancreatitis
Half the cases of acute pancreatitis are caused by gallstones blocking the outflow from the pancreas. The retained enzymes in the pancreas begin to digest the gland itself and this process may spread to close organs. The enzymes also get into the blood and can cause damage elsewhere in the body.
The severity of the pain can differ, often depending on the cause. One-fifth of cases are due to excessive alcohol intake, but in these cases there is usually a history of pancreatic problems.
Chronic pancreatitis is most common in men between 30 and 45 years-old who drink very large amounts of alcohol. It may also follow attacks of acute pancreatitis.
