Diagnosis of Periods, irregular
A diagnosis depends on noting medical history, method of contraception and age of the woman. If pregnancy is suspected, diagnosis would be by having a pregnancy test or ultrasound scan.
The doctor may test for a thyroid problem.
If there is pain, an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage may be suspected, and an ultrasound scan would be recommended.
Bleeding with intercourse or heavy bleeding between periods very occasionally indicates cancer and can be diagnosed by examination and biopsy testing, specific for the cancer.
