Treatment of Periods, irregular

Treatment is dependent on the reason for irregular periods. If bleeding irregularities started with having an IUD inserted, bleeding may settle down in 2-3 months or the IUD can be removed.

If irregular bleeding started with introduction of a new contraception pill, a change in the type of pill will be considered.

Treatment for hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid) involves drugs that inhibit the production of thyroid hormones or surgical removal of part of the thyroid gland.

Treatment for hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) involves replacement therapy with the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. The menstrual cycle will return to normal after these treatments.

During puberty or nearing menopause, many women have irregular periods so no treatment is necessary.

Stress or sudden weight loss may be diagnosed as a cause of irregular periods and women may be referred for relaxation techniques, stress management or counselling.

If cancer is diagnosed, treatment or surgery will be specific to the type of cancer found.
