Causes of Peritonitis
Peritonitis usually results from perforation of some part of the intestine so that the contents are able to gain access to the peritoneum and infect it.
Perforation of an inflamed appendix, or of a gastric or duodenal ulcer, are the most common causes of peritonitis, but it can also result from a perforating injury, as may occur in a stabbing assault.
