Plasma products

Over half of our blood consists of a liquid called plasma, which surrounds our blood cells and transports them around the body. It is made mainly from water, and contains proteins such as albumin, substances that help the blood to clot (control bleeding), and antibodies (which help fight infection). Plasma also contains hormones, minerals, salts, vitamins, fats and sugars.

Plasma plays a very important role in providing storage of fluid for the body, maintaining blood pressure and preventing blood vessels from collapsing. It also helps to cool and warm the body.

Plasma products are made by dividing the plasma into different proteins and other substances. Each plasma product has special medical uses.
