Causes of Pneumococcal infections
Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus Pneumoniae.
The bacteria is spread from person to person by close contact, coughing or sneezing. Once the bacteria has entered the body (usually via the ears, nose or throat) it can either lie dormant without causing any harm, or multiply and cause problems. If the bacteria spreads it can invade the lungs, bloodstream or nervous system.
