Prevention of Pneumococcal infections

The pneumococcal vaccination (known as ‘pneumo jab’) protects against the most common strains of pneumococcus bacteria and substantially reduces the chance of developing a range of pneumococcal diseases. The jab is routinely given to people over 80, and will be available to people between 65 and 80, where the risk is lower, over the next few years.

Basic hygiene and care such as hand-washing can prevent the spread of pneumococcal infection.
