Polyps, nose

A polyp is normally benign and often harmless tumour, usually occurring on a mucous membrane (such as inside the nose) and attached by a narrow stalk.

Polyps occur in the nose, nasal sinuses, voice box (larynx), stomach, bladder, large intestine and womb. They may sometimes cause obstruction or may bleed.

Nasal polyps are associated with long-term non-allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the nose) and may cause infection and a discharge. Nasal polyps are not malignant (cancerous).
