Causes of Pre-eclampsia
The cause of pre eclampsia is not fully understood. However it is thought that a problem develops with the blood vessels in the placenta causing it to be underdeveloped.
Researchers have discovered that levels of the hormone (activin A) are raised in the blood stream of women with pre-eclampsia, however the reason is unknown. The following factors may make pre-eclampsia more likely:·
- first pregnancy,
- family history of the condition, suggesting a genetic link,
- pre-eclampsia in a previous pregnancy. Roughly 20% of women with pre eclampsia will develop this condition again in later pregnancies,
- teenagers and women over 40 years,
- women with medical problems (e.g., diabetes, kidney disease, migraine or high blood pressure), and
- multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets).
