Diagnosis of Priapism
If you have a painful erection for more than four hours, you should visit your GP or A&E department. Once a diagnosis is made, it is important to get treatment as soon as possible.
The length of time you have had an erection is important. The doctor will ask you some questions about your medical history, what medication, if any, you are taking and if you are or have taken illegal drugs. They will then physically examine you. The physical examination will reveal a hard penis with a soft glans (the rounded mass of tissue at the end of the penis) .
