Causes of Primary biliary cirrhosis

There is some evidence that there is a genetic factor in the cause. No single gene that causes PBC has been found but it seems to be linked to certain genes for autoimmune disorders (when the body’s immune system starts reacting against its own healthy tissue).

Having a close relative with the condition increases the likelihood of having it. Other factors may trigger the condition in those that are genetically predisposed, because not all people in this group do develop PBC.
