Advantages of Progestogen-only pill
The progestogen-only pill has fewer serious side effects than the combined oral contraceptive pill. It is useful if you can’t take the hormone oestrogen, which is found in the combined pill. The progestogen-only pill is also suitable for women over the age of 35 who smoke – the combined contraceptive pill isn’t recommended for women in this category.
As with other oral contraceptives, the progestogen-only pill is easy to use and doesn’t interrupt sex. It can help to ease some symptoms of pre-menstrual tension (PMT) and period pain.
You can take the progestogen-only pill while you are breastfeeding. A tiny amount of the hormone can get into your breast milk but this isn’t harmful to your baby. You can start taking the progestogen-only pill as soon as you want after birth, but if you start it more than 21 days after birth, you will need to use an additional contraceptive for two days.
