Treatment of Prolapse of the uterus
Pelvic floor exercises can be helpful, as can weight loss in someone who is overweight. The treatment of prolapse involves a surgical operation to strengthen the floor of the pelvis and to shorten and tighten the supporting ligaments. In very severe cases, removal of the uterus (see hysterectomy) may be advised. In women who do not wish surgery or in whom surgery is thought undesirable, the uterus may often be kept in place by means of a polythene ring pessary that stretches the back wall of the vagina upwards.
