Reiter's syndrome

This condition affects mainly young men, though women can also be affected. It involves three specific medical problems:

  • Urethritis (inflammation of the urethra, the tube from the bladder to the outside),
  • Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the outer surface of the eye), and
  • Seronegative arthritis (joint inflammation where blood tests for special rheumatoid antibody proteins are negative).

Reiter’s syndrome has an acute phase (sudden onset of the illness for the first time), and can often be a long-term problem with flare-ups (chronic and relapsing).
