Treatment of Reye's syndrome
Treatment aims to control the brain swelling by using steroids to control the inflammation, and surgery to reduce the pressure within the skull.
Artificial ventilation (breathing helped by a machine) may be needed to support life.
With increasing understanding of the condition and its management, the death rate from Reye’s syndrome has dropped from about 50% to about 10% . Unfortunately some children suffer residual brain damage.
