Diagnosis of Scarlet fever

A firm diagnosis is usually made by a doctor based on the characteristic signs and symptoms.

The doctor may take a sample of saliva from the back of the throat (a throat swab) to be tested in the laboratory. This helps to confirm the bacteria causing the infection.

Scarlet fever is a notifiable disease. This means that your doctor must report any cases to the local health authorities so they can monitor the spread of the disease.
