Treatment of Sciatica
Since sciatica is a symptom, the correct treatment is to remove the cause, if possible. Nerve root pressure is often relieved by lying flat for up to 24 hours, as the weight of the body is then no longer pressing out the pulp from the disc. Too much bed rest, however, is counterproductive and should be avoided. Current advice is to try to remain active once the most acute pain has passed. Painkillers may be helpful in the short term.
Surgical removal of the prolapsed material may occasionally be necessary, but is less often done than formerly.
