Prevention of Scurvy

Vitamin C occurs so widely in fruit and vegetables that a moderate intake of these will provide more than the amount needed to prevent scurvy. Vitamin C is also found in milk, liver, kidney and fish. At least half of the vitamin C content of these foods survives cooking and preserving.

Taking large doses of vitamin C to prevent cancer or colds has been suggested, but there is no convincing evidence that this gives any benefit.
