Results of Sexual health clinics

Results for some tests can be given straight away. For others you may have to wait several weeks. The clinic will ask for your permission before phoning with your results, or they may send them in an unmarked envelope. You may be asked to come into the clinic for your results and to talk to one of the advisors. This is particularly the case with things like HIV.

If you find out you have an STI, the clinic will be able to talk to you about treatment. A lot of STIs can be cleared up with antibiotics. Some, such as HIV, are not curable. But the clinic should be able to put you in touch with a counsellor, as well as advising you on treatments that can help control the condition and stop it getting worse.

If possible, you should tell your present and previous sexual partners if you find out you have an STI so that they can get treatment as well. You may be able to ask the clinic to do this on your behalf.

The best way to prevent catching an STI is to always use a condom when you have sex.
