Complications of Sinusitis

Complications of sinusitis are rare, and antibiotics can often control the spread of infection to the adjoining bone.

Untreated cases may, very rarely, lead to:

  • periobital cellultis (spreading inflammation of tissue),
  • meningitis,
  • brain abscesses,
  • mucocoeles or mucopyocoeles (cysts or abrasions in the sinuses), or
  • venous sinus thrombosis (blood clots in the sinus veins).
