Symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome

The most obvious feature of Sjögren's syndrome is the dry-eye condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

There is a sense of grittiness in the eyes, a burning and itching sensation, redness, dimness of vision and sensitivity to light.

In the mouth there is a lack of saliva, a sense of dryness, difficulty in comfortable chewing and swallowing, soreness of the tongue and swelling of the salivary glands.

The senses of taste and smell are often lost. The nose can be painfully dry and the voice hoarse. There may be a persistent chest infection.

Dryness of the vagina causes difficulty and discomfort in sexual intercourse.

The condition often features Raynaud's phenomenon.
