Causes of Sjogren's syndrome

Sjögren's syndrome occurs most often in people with a particular tissue typing (HLA B8 DR3). It tends to occur in disorders such as:

  • rheumatoid arthritis,
  • lupuserythematosus,
  • myastheniagravis,
  • dermatitis, and
  • herpetiformis or autoimmune liver or thyroid disease.

About 25 to 50% of people with rheumatoid arthritis have Sjögren's syndrome and 90% of those affected are women, usually middle-aged and often post-menopausal.
