Diagnosis of Sore throat
This is based on the symptoms, the appearance of the throat and enlarged neck lymph nodes.
A swab may be taken for bacterial culture, which can help in identifying the germ or virus causing the soreness. Swabs are not routinely carried out, however, unless treatment is not working – an underlying condition such as glandular fever or diphtheria may be suspected.
