Causes of Sprains
A sprain occurs if a ligament is overstretched. Sprain of the ankle usually occurs as a result of ‘going over’ on to the outside of the foot. This means that the whole body weight presses down suddenly on the outer ligament of the ankle. As a result the ligament is stretched or even torn.
People wearing high-heeled shoes are more likely to suffer a sprained ankle than those in flat shoes. A sprain may occur during walking or running, especially over rough or uneven ground, or in the course of a fall or a car accident.
