Treatment of Sprains

If the injury is limited to a sprain and the tear in the ligament is no more than moderate, strapping with firm, broad elastic adhesive strapping that can stretch sideways but not lengthways is usually enough.

If a flake of bone has been pulled off, a plaster cast may be needed.

Rehabilitation of the joint using exercise to strengthen the ligament and surrounding muscles is important to prevent recurrence.
