Stillbirth

Stillbirth is an often-unforeseen event when a baby is not alive when it is born.

Stillbirth is now defined as any baby born with no signs of life after 24 weeks of pregnancy.  If there are no signs of life before 24 weeks, this is known as miscarriage.

The number of stillbirths has fallen steadily during the last 60 years in which figures have been obtained, but around 3,500 babies are stillborn in the UK each year.
