Causes of Stillbirth

In many cases, the cause of death of the baby cannot be established.

Known causes include:

  • diabetes or high blood pressure in the mother· rhesus factor disease
  • maternal high blood pressure and seizures in pregnancy (eclampsia)
  • severe malformations in the baby· problems with the placenta
  • premature rupture of the membranes surrounding the baby
  • infections such as toxoplasmosis, Group B Streptococcus, listeriosis or German measles (rubella).
