In many cases, the cause of death of the baby cannot be established.

Known causes include:

diabetes or high blood pressure in the motherÂ· rhesus factor disease
maternal high blood pressure and seizures in pregnancy (eclampsia)
severe malformations in the babyÂ· problems with the placenta
premature rupture of the membranes surrounding the baby
infections such as toxoplasmosis, Group B Streptococcus, listeriosis or German measles (rubella).
