Causes of Tuberous sclerosis

TS is a genetic condition.  It is caused by a problem with one of two genes that are involved in the process of controlling the growth of cells in the body.

Because TS is a genetic condition it can be passed on to a child. It is passed on in a way known as autosomal dominant.  In practice this means that a child with one parent with TS and one parent without will have a 50% chance of having the condition.

However, in about half of all cases of TS, nobody else in the family has the condition and there is no obvious cause.
