Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis

The symptoms can vary a great deal according to the extent of the disease. The most common symptoms are:

  •  Abdominal pain
  •  Bloody diarrhoea with mucus.

There may also be

  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding/ anaemia
  • Fever Loss of body fluids and nutrients
  • Constant desire to empty the bowels (known as tenesmus);

Many people have periods where there are few or no symptoms. The severity of attacks varies depending on how much of the colon is affected Some people will only have mild symptoms, while others will more severe attacks with acute abdominal cramps, high fever, and frequent bloody diarrhoea. Sometimes attacks can be so severe that they cause exhaustion and dehydration.
