Complications of Ulcerative colitis

  • In a few people inflammation may spread to other parts of the body These include: skin rashes, inflammation of the eye (uveitis), pain and inflammation of some joints (arthritis), and liver inflammation. This is possibly an immune response to inflammation of the large intestine that triggers inflammation in other parts of the body.
  • Iron deficiency anaemia due to loss of blood
  • A very severe flare-up can lead to the whole colon may become inflamed and ulcerated. This can lead to severe bleeding or a perforated colon. This is an uncommon but serious condition and surgery is usually necessary.
  • The risk of developing colon cancer increases if you have had ulcerative colitis for ten years or more.
