Symptoms of Uveitis

Some or all of these symptoms may be present:

Anterior uveitis / iritis:

  • symptoms may develop gradually over hours or days,
  • usually only one eye is affected,
  • aching, painful, red eye - pain can range from mild aching to intense discomfort,
  • small pupil with an irregular outline,
  • iris a slightly different colour,
  • sensitivity to light (photophobia),
  • floaters (dots that move across the field of vision),
  • blurred vision due to cells from the blood vessels leaking into the gel of the eye,
  • eye looks cloudy, and
  • headaches.

Intermediate uveitis:

  • both eyes usually affected,
  • not painful,
  • no redness,
  • floaters (dots that move across the field of vision), and
  • blurred vision due to cells from the blood vessels leaking into the gel of the eye.

Posterior uveitis:

  • only one eye normally affected,
  • not painful,
  • slower to develop,
  • can vary in severity,
  • often lasts longer than other types of uveitis, and
  • floaters (dots that move across the field of vision).
